SY Ecofit was founded by local residents with a shared commitment to making retrofit work for South Yorkshire. We are a social enterprise, rooted in South Yorkshire communities, improving the energy efficiency in homes and community centres.

By delivering retrofit projects, and creating networks and partnerships, we aim to bring South Yorkshire closer to net zero, foster community wealth building, and develop local skills.

How we work

At SY Ecofit, we take a hands-on, community-first approach to retrofit, with our own assessors, architects and dedicated install team that delivers end-to-end support. From the first conversation to completed improvements, tailored to the needs of local people across South Yorkshire.

We don’t offer one-size-fits-all solutions. Instead, we listen, advice, design, and deliver projects that reflect the diversity of South Yorkshire homes and the people who live in them. Not only do we recommend but we also install the best energy efficient measures for you and your home.

We form long-lasting partnerships with homeowners, community groups, social housing associations, and local contractors to deliver integrated, high-quality retrofit services that meet real needs.

Our retrofit work so far in South Yorkshire has saved the following amount of CO2 emissions (equivalent)

Amount of Carbon Sequestered

By using natural breathable materials such as woodfibre, hemp and lime-based plaster and render, which absorb and store carbon, we are locking in carbon emissions from the atmosphere.

We sequester c.15 tonnes of biogenic carbon into South Yorkshire’s homes each month.

Operational carbon Saved

By retrofitting our homes, we prevent heat from escaping, ensuring we use less energy to stay warm – when we do need to heat our homes, we emit less carbon.

As a result of our work, each year we reduce the annual carbon emissions of South Yorkshire’s homes by c.25 tonnes.

Why is this important?

The UK has the least energy efficient homes in Europe. Our homes use 35% of the UK’s energy and emit 20% of our carbon dioxide emissions. Fuel poverty levels in South Yorkshire are among the highest in the UK, and 60% of houses have an Energy Performance Certificate rating below C. Much of South Yorkshire’s housing is old, so improving the energy efficiency of existing housing is key.
